What NOT to Include in Your Resume Profile

Think carefully about the items you do include. You should only include items that directly promote your professional character. You will also want to consider protecting your privacy online. The following are some examples of items you should not include on your resume profile.

  • Photographs that are not business appropriate.
  • Personal information such as your street address or social security number.
  • Personal characteristics (height, weight, age), gender, religion, marital status, health, number of children or organizations considered controversial.
  • Jokes or other inappropriate content.

Another piece of advice is to have an email address that you use specifically for job hunting. The reason is two-fold. First, you want an email address you can cancel if you start getting spam email. This can occur after posting on some of the job-hunting web sites. Second, with the popularity of social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, employers have been known to search these sites using a prospective employees email address. Many times these social networking sites have been set up by people for fun and do not present the professional side you would want to share with an employer.
